Women's Lacrosse Shuts Down Roger Williams, 10-6

Box Score Springfield, Mass. – March 2, 2024 – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team put together a strong defensive showing that fueled them to a 10-6 win over Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The win boosted the Pride's record to 3-0 on the season, while the Hawks dropped their first outing of 2024 to fall to 1-1.

Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) produced her third hat trick of the season and Maddy Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) totaled two goals and an assist.  Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) was credited with a team-best five draw controls and Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) notched five saves in goal for the victory.  Springfield owned a 30-16 advantage in shots for the game, but RWU's Zoey Cormican turned in a 14-save performance.  Julia Kelly paced the visitor's offense with two goals and an assist.

The teams combined for eight goals in the first quarter as Springfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead with 7:21 left when Lily Johnson took an inside feed from Arielle Johnson (Pomfret, Conn.) for her first marker of the afternoon.  Roy got free with a dodge to her right and bounced home a shot on the run at 4:56 on the clock, only to have the visitors respond with the game's next three goals to take a 5-4 edge with 11:32 left in the second quarter.  After being held scoreless for over 14 minutes, the Pride got back into the scoring column on a free-position strike by Roy at 5:17, and Roy later found Lily Johnson in transition in the final seconds of the half to give the hosts a 6-5 edge.

Roger Williams was able to even the game at 4:22 in the third for what would prove to be their only goal of the second half on a power-play goal from Karli Chapin.  As time wound down in the third, Lily Johnson again came up in a big spot, stinging a goal on the run to put Springfield ahead for good with five seconds on the clock.

In the fourth, Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) and Lalancette struck for unassisted marks just over three minutes apart at 12:55 and 9:15 before Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) tacked on her second of the game on a free-position strike inside the final 10 seconds to seal the non-conference triumph.

Springfield will play once next week when it hosts Western New England on Tuesday evening at 5 pm.
