Dudley, Mass. – September 15, 2024 – The Springfield College women's tennis team opened its fall season this weekend at the Bison Invitational. Over the course of yesterday's tournament, the Pride faced off with Nichols College, Connecticut College and Bryant University.
The tournament was divided into multiple round robin brackets for singles competition, while doubles featured eight head-to-head matchups. The first two sets of each singles matchup were played to four points, while deciding third sets were played to seven.
In singles play,
Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) reached the championship final in the No. 2 singles bracket after a 4-2, 2-4, 7-5 win over Athmika Sreenivas of Bryant, while
Ramida Manataweewat (Bangkok, Thailand) reached the championship final in the No. 3 singles bracket after a 3-4, 4-0, 7-3 win over Bella Tan of Bryant.
Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.) was also a winner in the opening round at No. 5 singles as she bested Bethany Prendergast, 4-2, 2-4, 7-1.
Emalee Chaisson (Belchertown, Mass.) and
Grace Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) were victorious at No. 8 singles as Chaisson won her two matches by scores of 4-1, 4-0 and 4-3, 4-0, while Tyler won 3-4, 4-0, 7-4 and 4-0, 4-1.
In doubles play,
Kapom Vettayawaikoon (Phuket, Thailand) and Manataweewat bested the No. 2 duo from Bryant, 6-4, while
Ava Shea (Belchertown, Mass.) and Tyler blanked the No. 8 duo from Connecticut College, 6-0.
Springfield will head to Bowdoin College next weekend for the ITA Regional Championships, which will open on Friday, September 20.
