Springfield, Mass. – April 5, 2025 – The Springfield College women's tennis team toppled Wheaton College, 7-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt inside the Springfield College Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield improved to 6-3 overall and to 2-1 in NEWMAC play, while Wheaton fell to 5-8, 2-3.
Springfield won two of three doubles matches to take the point heading into singles play.
Ramida Manataweewat (Bangkok, Thailand) and
Kapom Vettayawaikoon (Phuket, Thailand) edged Alissa Ortiz and Kara Greenlee, 7-5, at No. 1 before
Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and
Alyssa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) earned a 6-3 decision at No. 2. Wheaton's No. 3 pairing won by a 6-3 final.
Springfield went on to win all six singles contests – five of which came in straight sets. Vettayawaikoon won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Heaney-Secord won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Manataweewat won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. At the bottom of the ladder, Elliott was victorious by a 6-1, 6-4 final at No. 4 and
Ava Shea (Belchertown, Mass.) blanked Haylee Doiron, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.) and Maya Brennan traded 6-4 decisions over the first two sets of their match at No. 5 before won 10-8 in the tiebreaker to secure the sweep for Springfield.
Springfield will host Saint Joseph's (Conn.) in a non-conference match on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
