Springfield, Mass. - February 19, 2023 - Over 20 Springfield College wrestlers competed in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament on Sunday at Western New England. Among the 14 teams in the competition, the Pride finished third with 101.5 points on the day.
Isiac Paulino (Athol, Mass.) took runner-up honors at 125 as he opened up the day with a technical fall, major decision, and decision before being clipped by Castleton's Kaya Boyle by a 2-0 margin in the championship. Ty Stewart (Dracut, Mass.) also finished second on the day as he wrestled tough at 141 pounds with a pair of pinfalls before besting teammate Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) in the semfinals, 4-2. In the title bout, Stewart was clipped, 4-3, by Matt Castillo from Roger Williams.
George Glaropoulos (Mansfield, Mass.) took third at 165 pounds as he bested David Lisk from WNE, 7-4, in the consolation finals, and Jeremy Scutellaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned three wins on the day at 157 pounds for a third-place finish of his own. Nicholas Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) also took third at 285, as did Luke Temple (Jackson, N.J.) at 149 pounds.
Other Springfield wrestlers who placed on the day included Kozdra earning fourth at 141 pounds, Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) placing fourth at 285, and Lucien Perla (Stow, Mass.) adding sixth-place points at 149 pounds.
