Simpson and Ramapo Top Softball In Day Three of Rebel Games

Kissimmee, Fla. – March 16, 2010 – The Springfield College softball team lost a pair of contests on Tuesday as it fell to Simpson College of Iowa, 2-1, before dropping a 10-2 decision to Ramapo in the third day of the Rebel Games.

After winning its season opener against Endicott, the Pride has now lost its last five games to stand at 1-5 on the season.

In the first game versus Simpson, Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Senior outfielder Caitlin Corry (Seekonk, Mass.) singled in the run in that frame. After that, there was a frustration factor, as SC had a runner on third in both the fourth and fifth innings, as well as the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but could not score.

In the bottom of the sixth, Simpson scored on a two-out, two-run double to take the 2-1 lead, and that proved to be the difference. Freshman pitcher Stef Grande (Manchester, Conn.) took the tough-luck loss, allowing only six hits in six innings.

Sophomore infielder Tess Gagliano (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) went 2-for-4, including a double. Corry went 2-for-3.

In the second game, Ramapo, the visiting team, jumped out by scoring three runs in the top of the first. But SC tallied twice in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-RBI double by junior 1B Amanda Novak (Cos Cob, Conn.).

Ramapo then scored two runs in the second inning, three in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, totalling 11 hits overall. Sophomore right-hander Megan Fitzgerald (Troy, N.Y.) took the loss, going the distance for the Pride. Sophomore Mackenzie O’Dea (Weymouth, Mass.) went 2-for-4 in that second game.

Springfield has the day off Wednesday, but will resume play with two games on Thursday (Mar. 18) against Wisconsin-River Falls at 11 am, then versus St. Norbert of Wisconsin at 3 pm.
