Kissimmee, Fla. – March 15, 2012 – Ashley Marino tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Springfield College softball team to a 2-0 win over Defiance on Thursday morning. And teammate Jennifer Joseph followed that up with a two-hit shutout to lead the Pride to 4-0 win over Endicott in the afternoon. SC is now 6-1 on this Spring Break trip.
The Pride managed just five hits in the first game win over Defiance of Ohio but was still able to scratch out two runs. First-year Amy Entel (Berkley, Mass.) cracked a single to plate the game’s only two runs as Springfield improved to 5-1 on the season.
Marino, a sophomore from Harrison, N.Y., finished the game with nine strikeouts as she posted Springfield’s third shutout of the early season.
In the nightcap, Joseph gave up only two singles — one to lead off the fifth, the other with one out in the seventh. The sophomore from Stamford, Conn. struck out nine and walked none in going the distance.
Meanwhile, it took until the sixth inning for SC to score. Senior Kasey Kelly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second. Junior shortstop Kelly Bake (Watertown, Conn.) then singled down the left field line, knocking in the game’s first run, advancing to second on the play. Junior first baseman Breann Joyce (Trumbull, Conn.) then singled to second, knocking home the second run. Two more runs scored on a double by junior rightfielder Chelsea Bender ((Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and by a single by Entel.
