Men's Soccer Battles To Scoreless Draw With Eastern Nazarene

Quincy, Mass. – September 26, 2012 – The Springfield College men’s soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with host Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Lions progress to 3-5-2 overall while the Pride moves to 2-7-1 with the result.

The two sides engaged in an closely contested opening half as both squads recorded six shots. Springfield held a narrow 2-1 edge in corner kicks earned in the first frame.

The Pride amped up their offensive attack in the second stanza, firing 12 shots while Eastern Nazarene registered two. Both teams conceded a corner kick in the second half.

Springfield rang a pair of shots off of the crossbar in the second half. Danny AmatoÂ's attempt bounced off the crossbar in the 55th minute and Marco CallistoÂ's 85th minute bid ricocheted off the woodwork.

The score remained at 0-0 at the end of regulation, forcing bonus soccer. The Lions escalated their play in the offensive third of the field in the overtime sessions. The hosts sported a 6-2 lead in shots after the 90th minute.

The visitors finished the match with a 20-14 margin in shots while the two teams each earned three corners.

Sophomore Jake Johnson stopped all five shots he faced in goal for the Lions as he picked up his first shutout of the year. Brett Bascom made two stops in goal for Springfield.

The Pride will return to action next Tuesday when it hosts Framingham State at 7:00 pm in a non-conference meeting.
