Rowan and Anderson Slip Past Softball In Final Day of Spring Break

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Kissimmee, Fla. – March 22, 2013 – In their final day of action at the 2013 Rebel Games, the Springfield College softball team lost a pair of close games Friday. Rowan edged the Pride, 4-2, while Anderson rallied past the Pride for a 5-4 victory.

The two setbacks wraps up Springfield’s annual Florida trip as the Pride leave with a 3-7 record, including four one-run losses.

In the 4-2 loss to Rowan, Breann Joyce and Christina Leader each totaled two hits. Despite registering eight strikeouts, Jennifer Joseph allowed four earned runs and walked four while giving up eight hits.

A leadoff walk to start the game came back to haunt the Pride after an RBI double four batters later gave Rowan an early 1-0 lead.

Springfield answered back to tie the game in the fourth thanks to Brielle Engelbrecht’s cracking her first-career home run with two outs on the board.

The long ball benefited Rowan in the sixth as a three-run shot gave them the lead for good. Joseph was nearly out of the inning after registering a pair of outs, however she extended the inning by hitting the next batter. Costello then hammered a three-run homer to provide Rowan with a 4-1 cushion.

The Pride’s seventh-inning rally fell short, despite scoring a run off an RBI single from Caitie Holik.

In Springfield’s second game of the day, Anderson used two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally to a 5-4 win. Chelsea Bender provided the highlight of the day for the Pride with a two-run homer. Ashley Marino was charged the loss after giving up four earned runs off 10 hits. She did tally six K’s on the afternoon.

Leader drew a walk to lead off the game and would later score the first run of the contest on an RBI single by Jenna Webb. Anderson answered with single runs in the second, fourth, and sixth to gain a 3-1 lead.

The Pride put together a great inning in the top of the seventh, plating three runs on three hits to regain a 4-3 advantage. Brittany Lally came around to score on a Katie Gill single before Bender connected on a two-run homer to put Springfield on top.

However, Anderson would not be denied, adding two runs off an solo homer and the game-winning RBI single with two outs.

The Pride will next scheduled to play on Tuesday in its home opener against Keene State at 3:30 on Potter Field.
