Men's Lacrosse Suffers Non-Conference Setback to No. 9 Endicott College

Beverly, Mass. - March 7, 2015 - Senior attackman Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted a team-high six points, but the Springfield College men's lacrosse team surrendered a 22-14 loss to Endicott College on Saturday afternoon at Endicott Stadium.

With the loss, the Pride fall to 2-2 overall on the season, while the Gulls improve to an unbeaten 4-0 to start 2015. Last season, the Pride bested Endicott 13-12 after senior Ryon Lynch netted an shot with 2:06 remaining in the second overtime period. This season, the Gulls were ranked No. 9 in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Rankings. 

Along with the six-point effort from Sheehan, including a pair of tallies and four helpers, Springfield was led by junior attackman Brendan Boss (West Springfield, Mass.) and Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) who each registered three points, while Boss had a goal and two assists, and LaGuerre had three strikes. 

Junior goalkeeper Kevin Ostrom (Barnstable, Mass.) posted nine saves on 29 shots, while Chris Santaniello (West Springfield, Mass.) came on in relief to make three saves over 7:40. For the Gulls, Cameron Bell (Falmouth, Maine) posted a game-high 12 saves on 26 shots from Springfield. Senior midfielder Mark Gonzalez (Tolland, Conn.) was strong at the face-off "x" for the Pride, as he went 17-for-29 on the afternoon. 

The Gulls opened the game with three-straight goals over the first 2:15 of the contest, receiving scoring from Colin Bannon (Westport, Conn.), Nick Pinciaro (Beverly, Mass.) and Jonathan Morgan (Lake Panamoka, N.Y.) to take an early 3-0 lead, before a pair of strikes from the Pride over a span of just 30 second from Boss and Bryce Serriello (Barnstable, Mass.) made it a one-point game. 

Endicott then rattled off two more goals from Ian Knechtle (New Canaan, Conn.) and Bannon to take a 5-2 lead with 7:55 left in the first quarter. After Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) struck with 6:49 left on the clock, Kyle Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) and Bannon scored back-to-back to give the Gulls a 7-3 lead with 1:52 left in the opening quarter.

LaGuerre would strike on a man-up opportunity off a feed from Sheehan with 10 seconds left in the first stanza, but Pinciaro was able to sneak an unassisted goal in as the buzzer sounded, giving the hosts an 8-4 lead at the end of one. 

The Gulls opened the second half with a pair of goals, including a strike from Knechtle just 24 seconds into the frame, followed by a man-up goal from Jeremy Morgan (Lake Panamoaka, N.Y.) to take a 10-4 lead, before three-straight goals, including one from Sheehan, and back-to-back strikes from LaGuerre over 38 seconds made it a three-point game, with Endicott leading 10-7 with 3:24 left before the halftime break. 

Pinciaro and Will Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) would close out the half with a pair of strikes, as Endicott took a 12-7 edge into the locker room. 

Springfield would open the second half with goals from Boss and Kevin Dean (Westhampton, N.Y.) to cut the Pride's deficit to three, but the Gulls would respond with a pair from Pinciaro and Weber to regain its five-point advantage. 

After Sheehan scored again off a feed from Ty Daugstrup (Rocky River, Ohio) with 3:19 left in the third quarter, Pinicaro and Jonathan Morgan struck to make it 16-10, Endicott, heading into the fourth. 

The Gulls rattled off five-straight goals to open the final quarter to take a commanding 21-10 lead with 9:14 left, before Kevin Sainte (Belmont, Mass.), Jamey Conley (Waltham, Mass.) and Daugstrup scored consecutive goals to make it 21-13, Gulls. 

Doug Richardson (Arlington, Mass.) would score with 1:34 left to make it 22-13, before Jesse Freedman (Granby, Conn.) finished out the day with a goal to close out the contest. 

The Pride will clash with another nationally-ranked squad next Saturday when it hosts Union at 1:00 pm.
