Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 12, 2015 - Sophomore Wayne Belcher (Norton, Mass.) and freshman Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.) both registered their first-career goals, as the Springfield College men's soccer program defeated Westfield State, 4-0, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield remains unbeaten and is now 3-0, its best start since the 2010 season. Westfield State falls to 0-5 on the year.
Senior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) picked up his third win of the season, as he registered two saves for the Pride, before freshman Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) saw his first-career action in between the pipes, and did not need to register a save to preserve the victory. For the Owls, Alex Kraver (West Springfield, Mass.) got the start, and finished with eight saves, while Marc Patnaude (North Andover, Mass.) came on in relief to pick up three stops on the afternoon. Springfield held a 24-6 margin in shots, and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Springfield opened the scoring just 9:58 into the contest, when Connor Archambault (Torrance, Calif.) hit a streaking Christian Steidle (Owego, N.Y.) on the left sideline, who fired a pass into the middle of the field, that found the foot of Luke Alvaro (Somers, Conn.), who then turned on the ball and found the back of the net to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage.
The Pride eventually extend its lead to two, when Arroyo took in a goal kick from Kraver, and touched a pass to Belcher on the right sideline, who carried the ball down the side, crossed back to the middle of the field, and let a shot go that hit off the right post and into the net to give the Pride a 2-0 lead with 17:35 remaining in the opening half.
With 9:01 left in the half, Arroyo would find the back of the net for his first-career goal from well outside the box after receiving a pass from sophomore Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.), giving Springfield a 3-0 edge over the Owls heading into the halftime break.
Springfield would score its lone goal of the second half, when Belcher played a ball up to Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.), who then crossed the ball and found an open Alvaro, who blasted a shot past Patnoude to put the Pride up 4-0 with 1:54 left in the contest.
Up next, Springfield will host Southern Vermont, back on Brock-Affleck Field on Sunday, September 13 at 11 a.m.
