No. 17 Union Rallies Past Men's Lacrosse, 13-12, In Overtime

Box Score

Massapequa, N.Y. - March 12, 2016 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 13-12 overtime decision to nationally-ranked Union on Saturday afternoon at Burns Park as part of the annual Supervisors Challenge.

In goal, Chris Santaniello (West Springfield, Mass.) had a standout showing for the Pride as he notched 16 saves between the pipes.  Union held a 51-33 edge in shots, a 32-18 advantage in ground balls, and won 19-of-28 face-offs.

Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) led Springfield with three goals and an assist, while Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.), Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) and Brendan Dooley (Setauket, N.Y.) each tallied three points in the setback.

Springfield jumped out of the gates to earn a 3-0 lead just over six minutes into the ball game off markers from Ty Daugstrup (Rocky River, Ohio), Abate, and Sheehan and would take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter on Hurley's first of the game with 5:47 left in the first.

Despite Union holding a 13-4 edge in shots in the second period, each team found the back of the cage three times as the Pride owned a 7-5 cushion at the half.

The Dutchmen climbed with 8-7 at the 10:52 mark, but a goal from Tim Cozens (Ridgefield, Conn.) and an unassisted strike by Hurley with two seconds on the clock gave Springfield back a three-goal cushion at 10-7.

Union opened play in the fourth period with five consecutive goals in a 9:05 span to snag a 12-10 lead.  However, Springfield showed plenty of grit down the stretch, using a Daugstrup goal at 3:48 to make it a one goal game before Sheehan found Abate 54 seconds later for a man-down goal to send the game into overtime.

With 56 seconds left on the clock in overtime, Union converted on the game-winner to escape with the one-goal win.

Springfield will play again this Wednesday in Clermont, Florida when it takes on Bowdoin.
