Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 19, 2016 - Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) found the back of the cage just 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Springfield College men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory over Endicott on Saturday afternoon on Stagg Field.
The Pride snapped its four-game slide to improve to 2-4, while the loss dropped Endicott's record to 2-5.
Springfield held a 40-37 edge in shots for the game, despite winning just 3-of-26 face-offs. The Pride committed just 13 turnovers in the game and went 25-for-26 on clears.
Chris Santaniello (West Springfield, Mass.) was tremendous between the pipes for the hosts, collecting a career-best 20 saves. Hurley led the Pride with three goals, while Kevin Dean (Westhampton, N.Y.) added two goals and an assists. Brendan Dooley (Setauket, N.Y.) added a goal and two helpers and Connor Samuelson (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up a team-best five ground balls.
Will Jennings scored a game-high six goals from Endicott, while Colin Bannon added a goal and two assists. Tommy Hughes was dominant from the face-off "X", going 23-for-26 to go along with 10 ground balls. Cameron Bell was charged with the loss despite making 13 stops.
Santaniello was outstanding in the opening 15 minutes of action, making six stops, including a pair on the doorstep. After a sloppy start for both teams, Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) netted the game's first goal when he took a feed from Dean and slipped in a bounce shot into the bottom right corner at the 7:33 mark. Tim Cozens (Ridgefield, Conn.) added to the Pride's lead after he stepped into one from 10 yards out with 3:39 on the clock and Dean scooped up a ground ball in traffic and ripped a low, skimming shot into the back of the cage 1:41 later to put the hosts ahead 3-0.
The visitors responded with three unaswerend strikes to begin the second quarter in the first 5:07 on goals from Peter Field Jr., Jennings, and Mitchell Tapley. Hurley would stop the Endicott run after he got free from behind the cage with 2:46 left in the half, burying Logan Tormey's (Windermer, Fla.) feed into the top shelf to put Springfield ahead 4-3 at the half.
Springfield made the most of winning its first faceoff the the day as Hurley blistered an unassisted goal just 41 seconds into the second half to give the Pride a two-goal advantage. However, the Gulls answered back with six-straight goals, including four by Jennings, in a 9:53 span to earn a 9-5 lead with 4:06 left in the third.
Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) stung the top corner for a man-up goal 35 seconds into the fourth to pull the Pride within 9-7, only to have goals from Jennings and Bannon sandwich a Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine) marker to keep Endicott ahead, 11-8 with 7:29 remaining in regulation. However, Dooley kickstarted the Pride's final push with a spectacular diving goal as he was falling away from the cage, before Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) beat his man down the alley and bounced in a shot to pull the Pride within 11-10 with 4:20 left. Dean knotted the game up just over a minute later following an awesome look by Dooley and Santaniello made a huge stop down the stretch to force overtime.
In the extra session, Jake Versprille (Franklin, Mass.) forced an Endicott turnover on the opening possession, hustled for the ground ball and raced up field in transition. The senior connected with Hurley, who fired a shot past Bell 43 seconds into the overtime period to complete the comeback victory.
Springfield will now prepare to face cross-town rival Western New England on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
