Box Score Cambridge, Mass. - April 30, 2016 - In a game that featured both teams having separate 10-0 scoring runs, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team secured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season title with a 14-12 win at MIT on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Springfield is now 9-7, including 7-0 in conference play and earned the top seed for the NEWMAC Championship, which will begin on Wednesday evening.
Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) scored a career-best five goals and Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted a team-best six points on two goals and four assists. Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) added three goals and Matthew LaCroix (Westfield, Mass.) went 14-for-24 from the "X" with eight ground balls. Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) was credited with a career-high 17 saves in goal.
After Abate and LaGuerre scored to give the visiting Pride a 2-0 lead with 8:17 left in the first quarter, the host Engineers put together an incredible 10-0 run over the next 20-plus minutes to take a commanding 10-2 lead. The Engineers scored five man-up goals in the stretch. Unassisted goals from Tim Cozens (Ridgfield, Conn.) and Abate in the final 1:47 of the half brought Springfield within 10-4 at the half.
The Pride opened up the second half with eight-straight tallies en route to a a 10-0 surge of their own to take a 12-10 cushion just 2:33 into the fourth quarter on Sheehan's second marker of the game. MIT answered right back with a pair of goal just 58 seconds apart to tie the game, only to have Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine) find the back of the cage with 5:30 on the clock for the eventual game-winner. Abate tacked on his fifth of the game with 27 ticks on the clock to seal the wild, shootout victory.
Both teams were especially efficient on their man-up opportunities in the game, with MIT going 6-for-8 and Springfield scoring on 4-of-7 chances.
