Softball Falls Twice to MIT in NEWMAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Cambridge, Mass. - April 9, 2016 - Despite another dominant pitching performance from sophomore Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.), the Springfield College softball program fell twice to the MIT Engineers in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

With the losses, Springfield is now 13-9 overall and 6-4 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers improve to 17-5 on the season and 10-0 in conference play.

Up next, Springfield will return to Potter Field and will host Skidmore in non-conference action beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12.

MIT 1, Springfield 0 -- Game One

Loda pitched 6.0 innings of three-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out two, but the Pride fell to the Engineers 1-0 in the first of two games at Briggs Field in Cambridge on Saturday.

For MIT, Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) picked up her 10th win of the season, as she pitched 7.0 innings, giving up just two hits and one walk while striking out 15 batters to earn the shut-out victory.

The Engineers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Amanda Lee (Saratoga, Calif) singled to left, allowing Ali Truworthy (Rochester, N.Y.) to cross home for the eventual game-winning run.

Marshall was able to contain the Springfield bats in the final two innings, preserving the victory.

MIT 4, Springfield 3 -- Game Two

Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) picked up a team-best two RBI and Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) added another, but the Pride fell short of MIT, 4-3, in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday in Cambridge.

Junior Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.) took the circle and pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out four, while Jordyn Moquin (Plantsville, Conn.) came on to pitch 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and one run but took the loss, her second of the season.

Springfield got on the board in the top of the first inning when Joseph singled to center, scoring Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) to give the Pride a 1-0 lead, before MIT tied it up in the bottom half of the frame to make it 1-1 after one.

In the Pride's ensuing at bat, Nelson roped a single into center to score Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) and Rachel Ball (Coventry, R.I.) to help the Pride gain a two-run lead heading into the third, but MIT would once again even the score in the bottom of the third to make it 3-3 after three.

The two sides were contained until the bottom of the seventh, when Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) reached first on an error, allowing Jasmin Joseph (Woodland Hills, Calif.) to cross the plate thus giving the Engineers the walk-off win.
