Softball Splits With Emerson in NEWMAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Boston, Mass. - March 31, 2018 - The Springfield College softball team dropped game one but won game two in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.

The Pride is now 13-5 on the year and 1-3 in league play, while Emerson is now 13-5 overall with a 3-3 mark against league opponents.

Springfield College will resume play on Wednesday, April 4 as the Pride hosts Wellesley at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Potter Field.

Emerson 2, Springfield College 1 -- Game One

Senior pitcher Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) pitched 6.0 strong innings, giving up just seven hits and two runs while also striking out four, but Emerson's two-run bottom of the fourth proved to be enough to beat the Pride, 2-1, in game one of a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday.

Loda also went 2-for-4 with a double while Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.), Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) and Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) also collected hits on the day.

After Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) began the frame with a single to left, Molly Goldstein (Ridgefield, Conn.) would single to right to score Leonardos, before Maddie Tomich (Lithia, Fla.) doubled to center to plate Goldstein and give Emerson a 2-0 lead.

Springfield would rally in the top of the seventh when Conley doubled to left, before Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) moved her to third on a ground out to third. Pinch hitting for Rachel Ball (Coventry, R.I.), Yaixsa Vargas (Waterbury, Conn.) reached on an error, allowing Conley to cross home, but the Lions would pick up the final out to preserve the win.

Springfield College 6, Emerson 1 -- Game Two

Allen registered three RBI and earned her fifth win of the year in the circle in game two as the Pride defeated Emerson, 6-1. Allen finished the game pitching all 7.0 innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four as well.

Allen finished with a pair of hits, one of which was her second home run in as many days, as the junior drove her first-career home run to left field in Friday night's doubleheader against WPI. Wheeler also finished 2-for-3 at the plate in game two with an RBI.

Allen laced a single to left field in the top of the first to score Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.), giving the Pride a 1-0 advantage, before Emerson answered when Micaela Dix (White House Station, N.J.) scored Tomich with an infield second in the bottom of the second.

Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) would score in the top of the third on an error from the Lions, before Springfield College added a pair more on one swing from Allen in the top of the fifth. The Pride picked up two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Wheeler drove in Jackie Baldoni (Watertown, Conn.) on a sacrifice fly, before Heather Cicinnati (Centereach, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch to seal the 6-1 win.
