Baseball Uses Hot Start to Defeat Westfield State, 10-5, in Non-Conference Play

Springfield, Mass. - April 24, 2019 - The Springfield College baseball team poured on seven runs in the bottom of the first and added three more in the bottom of the third en route to a 10-5 victory over Westfield State in non-conference play at Archie Allen on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride improves to 18-15 overall, while the Owls fall to 19-10 on the year. 

Freshman pitcher Mitch Wright (Clifton Park, N.Y.) got the nod for the Pride and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits while striking out a pair, before Cole Donovan (Holderness, N.H.), Nick Naples (Kensington, Conn.), Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) and Kenny Walton (New Providence, Pa.) each took one inning of relief.

At the plate, sophomore Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Jason Bean (Middleboro, Mass.) and Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) each had two RBI in the win. 

Springfield College got things going in the bottom of the first inning when Cooney singled up the middle to score Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.), before Bleakley filed out to center, but Cooney tagged up and scored to make it 2-0. Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) then singled to left to score Mark Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.), before Bean laced a two-run single to left, plating Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) and Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.).

The rally continued when Russo walked with the bases loaded, allowing Rivest to come home, before Cooney reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Bean to make it 7-0.

Westfield State rallied for three runs in the top of the second to cut its deficit to four, but Springfield College pushed its lead back to seven with three runs in the bottom of the third. Cooney singled to left to score Bean, before Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) drove in Alex Denoyelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) with a sacrifice fly to center. Wrapping up the rally, Bleakley singled to left to plate Russo, his second scored run of the day.

Westfield State would tack on a run in the top of the sixth and two in the top of the seventh, but the Pride's bullpen locked in an held off a late push from the Owls, resulting in the five-run with for the maroon and white.

Springfield College will now turn its attention to another non-conference opponent, Amherst College, as the Pride will travel to the Mammoths for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Thursday, April 25.
