Springfield, competing as one of the final 16 teams in the tournament for the first time since 2016 and fourth time in the past 10 seasons, had the season come to a close with an 11-10 record.
For the game, Cabrini owned a 56-26 advantage in shots, a 37-25 edge in ground balls, and won 17-of-27 face-offs. Riley White turned in 10 saves earning the win.
Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.) made 14 saves in his final collegiate game for the Pride, capping off a remarkable senior season in which he totaled 270 saves, which was the second most in single-season program history. Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) led Springfield with three goals and an assist, while Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) notched two goals and a helper as each concluded their careers at Springfield.
The Cavaliers scored a pair of unassisted goals to open up the game, as Krug buried a strike on just 25 seconds into the contest before Mike Gerzabek elevated along the crease for a goal with eight minutes left in the quarter. Springfield would respond, as Cole Pecora (North Haven, Conn.) found Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) all alone in front of the cage at 5:15 before Zachary Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) stung a shot just under the cross bar 36 seconds later to even the game up. The hosts then benefitted from two more goals from Krug in the final 3:20 of the quarter to gain a 4-2 edge after 15 minutes of play.
Despite turning the ball over eight times in the second quarter, Springfield was able to find the back of the cage three times on just five shots to go into the half trailing 6-5. Vail scored twice for the Pride, getting things going at 10:48 when he tucked home a shot in transition off a great look from Devin Samuelson (Longmeadow, Mass.) before he converted a feed from Schuette just over a minute later. The Cavaliers answered with their first goal of the stanza at 8:11, but Cameron Glover (Brunswick, Maine) knotted the game up at 5-5 with 3:57 on the clock. Cabrini would then use a strike from Kostack just over a minute later to take a 6-5 advantage into the half.
The Cavaliers opened up the third quarter with three-straight goals in the opening four-plus minutes, but Vail and Habich strung together two goals 2:15 apart to pull the Pride within 9-7 with 6:16 on the clock. However, a man-up goal from Kostack with just over two minutes left in the third gave the Cavaliers a three-goal cushion heading into the fourth.
After back-to-back strikes from Tucker to begin the fourth push the advantage to 12-7, Habich delivered a sensational goal at 9:28 for what would prove to be Springfield's final goal of the game. The hosts added three goals in the final 6:43 en route to the 15-8 triumph.
