Box Score Pittsford, N.Y. - February 22, 2020 - Despite being tied at halftime, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to Nazareth in its season opener at NLPA Turf Field on Saturday, 14-10, in non-conference action.
Springfield drops to 0-1 on the season while Nazareth improves to 1-0. Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) finished with six goals for the Pride, while Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals and one assist. Joe Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) led the team with seven ground balls and Dan Biesty (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots.
The Pride held a 38-35 edge in shots for the game and forced Nazareth in 20 turnovers. Springfield won 11 of the game's 27 faceoffs, but Nazareth owned a 40-23 edge in ground balls.
Jeremy Jacobs got the Golden Flyers on the board just 58 seconds into the game before Jon Roth doubled the lead three minutes later. Watson scored the first goal of the season for Springfield with 8:59 left in the first quarter to make it 2-1, and Schuette gave Springfield its first lead with two straight goals to make it 3-2 with 6:51 left in the quarter. Nazareth responded with a strike just 35 seconds later, ending the first quarter with the game knotted up at three.
The teams traded goals for the entire second quarter, with no team holding a lead more than one, and headed into halftime tied at eight. Isaac Chase (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up his first goal of the season in the quarter and Schuette ended the half with three consecutive goals for the Pride, including a marker with 20 ticks remaining to make it an 8-8 contest.
Nazareth found the back of the net twice in the third before Schuette got his sixth goal of the game to make it 10-9 following a man-up strike with 1:49 on the clock. The Golden Flyers scored two goals within the first 6:38 of the fourth to open a 12-9 lead, and despite Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.) burying a feed from Watson to make it 12-10 with 4:53 remaining, Nazareth tacked on two more goals just 46 seconds apart to seal the win.
Springfield continues with non-conference play and will travel to Stevens next Saturday.
