Springfield, Mass. - December 10, 2021 - Wrestling under the lights in Blake Arena, the Springfield College wrestling team rallied for a 27-18 victory over Roger Williams on Friday evening.
The win boosted the Pride's dual meet record to 3-0 on the season, while the Hawks dipped to 9-3.
Starting off the match at 165 pounds, Jake Harry (Lancaster, N.Y.) delivered a 12-3 major decision to give the hosts an early 4-0 advantage. The visitors responded with a decision at 174 and victories by pinfall at 184 and 197 as their lead ballooned to 15-4. However, Mike Filieri (Garfield, N.J.) answered back at 285 with a hard-fought 8-4 victory before Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.), who entered the evening ranked No. 4 in the country at 125 pounds, make quick work of his opponent with a 16-1 technical fall in the first period.
At 133 pounds, the nation's fourth-ranked wrestler Kyle Kaiser from RWU needed overtime to outlast Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) by a 3-1 margin, only to have Chris Trelli (Bristol, Conn.) earn six points by injury default in a match that he held a 12-3 advantage. Springfield kept the momentum going at 149, as a 6-1 decision by Chase Parrott (Stamford, Conn.) put Springfield on top 21-18.
In the final showdown of the night, Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) raced out to an early first-period lead and would eventually pin his opponent at the 6:19 mark to lift Springfield to the 27-18 victory.
Springfield will compete again on Saturday when it travels to Rhode Island for the Scott Viera Open.
