Providence, R.I. - January 23, 2022 - The Springfield College wrestling team went 2-2 at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championship and finished fourth in the 16-team tournament that was hosted at Johnson & Wales University.  The Pride entered the tournament seeded fourth and was ranked 29th in the nation in the latest NWCA National Rankings.

Springfield eased past Bridgewater State, 48-4, to start the day before cruising past Norwich, 32-16.  In the semifinals, Springfield fell to nationally-ranked Coast Guard, 33-13, and was clipped by Castleton, 19-13, in the third-place bout.

It was an impressive start to the day for the Pride as it won nine of the 10 bouts, including five by pinfall, to take a 48-4 victory versus Bridgewater State.  Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) began the day with a 13-3 major decision at 125 before his brother Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) delivered a pin in 4:30 at 133.  Chris Trelli (Bristol, Conn.) returned to the lineup and needed just 32 seconds for a pin at 141 and Chase Parrott (Stamford, Conn.) added a 25-7 technical fall at 149.  Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) was impressive at 157 with a pin in only 30 seconds and Jake Harry (Lancaster, N.Y.) added a pinfall in 1:52 at 165.  The Pride benefitted from a forfeit at 174 before John Summers (Fairfield, Conn.) added a 4-1 decsion at 197 and Michael Filieri (Garfield, N.J.) produced a pin at 285 in 1:58 to conclude the scoring.

The Pride then clashed with 12th-seeded Norwich and jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 32-16 triumph.  Joey Manginelli was dominant at 125 with a 16-0 technical and Gianni Manginelli followed with his second pin of the day, this one coming in 2:35. A 15-5 major from Trelli gave the Pride its third win of the bout, but Norwich was able to get on the board with a decision at 149.  Deguire answered right back with a pin in just 18 seconds at 157, and Harry added a 13-3 major at 165.  Dillan Palaszewski (Galway, N.Y.) registered a 9-4 decision at 184 and Filieri put the exclamation point on the team win following his 13-2 major decision at 285.

In a semifinal showdown with Coast Guard, Joey Manginelli continued his winning ways at 125 with a 14-4 major decision.  Coast Guard responded with three-consecutive victories, including a 2-1 victory at 149 in a battle between the top two-ranked wrestlers in the region.  Deguire recorded this third pin of the day as he put his opponent on his back in 4:46 at 157, only to have the Bears reel off four-straight pins of their own to take control of the match.  Filieri was able to record his third victory of the day following a 5-3 decision.

In the third-place bout versus Castleton, Joey Manginelli notched a 21-8 major decision before the teams traded four decisions, with Trelli picking up a 3-0 win at 141 and Deguire adding a 10-3 victory at 157. However, the Spartans then ran off four-straight wins, three by decision and another by major decision, to go up 19-10.  Filieri tacked on his fourth win of the day with a 4-2 decision at 285 to close out the tournament.

Next Saturday, Springfield will head to Vermont for a quad with Castleton, Johnson & Wales, and Cortland.
