Men's Soccer Cruises Past Clark, 4-1

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 22, 2022 - The Springfield College men's soccer program produced its highest goal total of the season in a  4-1 win over Clark University on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

With the win, Springfield snaps a four-game losing streak and improves to 3-9-2 with a 2-4 conference record. Springfield outshot Clark, 20-17, and earned eight corners.

Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) comes up with the win after collecting five saves in the game.

The Pride made several advances to the goal through the first half of the opening period, including a great header bid from Brad Bornn (Bethel, Conn.) in the 10th-minute that came up just short. Springfield prevented Clark from getting a clear shot on goal as the Cougars were only able to take aim twice in the first half. The Pride were able to capitalize on a corner opportunity as Parker Thornton (Malden, Mass.) buried a header past DiStefano off the feed from Jack Rosenberg (Simsbury, Conn.) to put Springfield ahead 1-0. Rosenberg added a goal of his own just two minutes later, off an assist from Nicholas Parakalis (Broad Brook, Conn.),  to double the Pride's lead with nine minutes to go. In the 42nd-minute, Clark clipped into Springfield's first half lead as Teddy Donahue found Luke Shelton for the header to make it a 2-1 game.

Clark had a chance to tie the game as Zachary Kratz took a ball up the middle in the 49th-minute, but Knibbs shuffled out to bat the ball back and Kratz's rebound attempt flew high to keep the Pride ahead 2-1. At 66:55, the Cougars threatened to tie the game with a flurry of chances in the box, however Knibbs scooped up the deflected shot. On the other end, Matthew Mela (Natick, Mass.) crossed inside and stuck an unassisted shot to lift the Pride's advantage to 3-1. Clark continued to seek comeback plays as William Lopez bent in a shot on goal at the 75th-minute mark, but Knibbs came up with another athletic save to fend off the Cougars. Springfield capped off its scoring for the day after a free kick from Rosenberg met with Parakilas to lift the Pride to a 4-1 lead, which allowed Springfield to coast to victory.

Springfield dips into non-conference play on Tuesday, October 25 at 7 pm against Skidmore in the final home game of the season.
