Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 25, 2022 - In its final home game of the regular season, the Springfield College field hockey team picked up a 3-2 victory over Gordon in non-conference play on Stagg Field.
The win evened Springfield's record to 8-8 on the year as the Pride has now strung together four-consecutive victories. The loss for Gordon dropped them to 2-13.
Statistically, Springfield had the advantage for much of the game as the Pride held a 27-6 cushion in shots and a 13-4 edge in penalty corners. Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) was credited with two saves as he earned her sixth victory of the season in the cage.
It was an action packed first quarter as the two squads combined for all five goals. For the second-straight game, Grace Majka (Simsbury, Conn.) netted a goal in the opening two minutes of the game as she slammed home a rebound at the 1:34 mark of the game. Gordon responded with a goal just over two minutes later when Avonlea Cummings took a feed from Macy Balmer off a penalty corner to knot the game up. The visitors would then take a 2-1 lead in the 13th minute when Anna Rathbun cleaned up a rebound opportunity, only to have Maddy Dunne (Clifton Park, N.Y. ) redirect a Molly Collins (Franklin, Mass.) drive on the doorstep just 29 seconds later. Springfield would tack on their third goal of the period with 19 seconds remaining as a transition opportunity allowed the Pride to have a 3v2 situation which Dunne found Audrey Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) on the backside for what would prove to be the game-winning strike.
Despite holding a 14-0 cushion in shots in the second and third quarters combined, Springfield would be held off the scoreboard. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, but Springfield was able to keep Gordon at bay as it held on for the non-conference win.
Springfield plays in its non-conference finale on Thursday when it makes the short trip to Western New England for a 7 pm tilt.
