Box Score Hoboken, N.J. - February 26, 2022 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team was edged in overtime, 14-13, at Stevens on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference clash.
The Ducks, who were ranked 18th in the latest USILA National Poll, improved to 1-2 on the season, while Springfield, who was also receiving votes in the national poll, dipped to 1-1.
For the game, Stevens held a 45-29 edge in shots and a 45-32 advantage in ground balls. Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) turned in a four-goal performance for the Pride, while Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and Chris Santa Barbara (Hillsborough, N.J.) each had two goals and two helpers. Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) had six ground balls as he won 14 face-offs and Connor Dubzinski (West Rutland, Mass.) caused three turnovers. In goal, Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) and Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) split time, with Pesce making nine saves in the final 31:42 of the game.
After Stevens scored the first goal of the game at the 9:43 mark of the opening quarter, the Pride rattled off three-straight markers, with Santa Barbara connecting with Schuette at 3:23 to give Springfield a 3-1 edge. The Ducks would answer with three-consecutive goals of their own to regain a one-goal lead just 30 seconds into the second quarter. It was a frantic second period as the teams combined for 12 goals, with Springfield scoring three of the next four in the contest to take a 6-5 lead after another strike by Schuette at 11:50. A goal from Joe Maimone (Allendale, N.J.) with 34 ticks on the clock would knot the contest at 9-9 heading into halftime.
After Stevens opened up the third two back-to-back goals 52 seconds apart inside the four-minute mark, Jarrett Nagengast (Bay Shore, N.Y.) struck for his first of the season 36 seconds later to pull the Pride within a goal. However, Stevens would close out the scoring with another marker with nine seconds remaining to take a 12-10 lead into the fourth. Burgmyer would account for a hat trick in the fourth, with his fourth goal of the game coming in thrilling fashion. Out of a timeout, Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) handed out his third assist of the game as Burgmyer stepped into a shot from the right wing with 8.8 seconds remaining to force overtime. Burmyer's heroics were set up by an incredible play by Pesce, who earned the Pride its final possession after sliding in front of an empty cage to thwart the Ducks late offensive threat.
In overtime, the teams traded turnovers before the Ducks struck for the game winner at the 2:18 mark to earn their first win of the season.
The Pride will return home for another clash with a nationally-ranked team next Saturday when it hosts No. 12 Union at 1 pm.
