Box Score West Point, N.Y. - March 15, 2022 - For the second time this season, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team was edged in overtime as it dropped an 11-10 decision to Endicott at Michie Stadium on the campus of Army West Point.
Endicott earns its first victory of the season to improve to 1-4, while the Pride dropped to 1-4.
Neither team was able to settle into an offensive rhythm for much of the first quarter until Sam Abate netted the game's first goal at 2:19. The Pride responded just over a minute later on an unassisted marker from Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), and Joe Maimone (Allendale, N.J.) would finish a terrific feed from Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) 56 seconds into the second quarter to give Springfield its first lead of the game.
50 seconds later, Endicott evened things up as Abate connected with Michael Hauptman, but the Pride would close out the second quarter with three unanswered goals to head into the break with a 5-2 lead. Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) got the run started as he buried a shot on the run at 12:07 and the Pride benefitted from transition strikes from Kyle McEniry (Franklin, Mass.) and Nicholas Gorman (Valhalla, N.Y.) inside the final 2:19 to close out the first-half scoring.
Springfield pushed its lead to 7-3 midway through the third following back-to-back strikes from Burmyer 26 seconds apart, only to have the Gulls answer with three-straight markers to tie things up at 7-7 with 14:17 left in regulation. The teams would trade the next six goals, with Schuette's second of the game coming on an incredible individual effort with 1:59. However, Endicott was able to force overtime on a tremendous finish by Hauptman 32 seconds later.
Despite winning the opening draw, Springfield turned the ball over and the Gulls brought the ball into the box and called timeout. Out of the break, Nick Pagluiso found Dominic Russo on the doorstep for the game-winning streak just 37 seconds into the extra session.
Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) finished the game with 15 saves, while Tim Luciano came in during the second half for Endicott and earned the win in goal after making five saves. The Pride held a 37-28 edge in ground balls as Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) went 15-for-24 on face-offs. The Pride also held a 44-35 advantage in shots in the contest.
The Pride will open up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when it hosts Wheaton at 12 pm.
