Softball Battles With Arcadia and Nichols Down In Florida

Clermont, Fl. - March 15, 2022 - The Springfield College softball program played a pair of highly-competitive games on Tuesday afternoon as the Pride dropped its first game of the season in a 9-8 extra inning affair to Arcadia, before, scoring with two outs in the seventh to get past Nichols in the second game of the day as The Spring Games continued in Clermont, Florida. 

Springfield returns to action on Thursday with games against Wisc.-Stout at 11:30 am and versus Framingham State at 4:30 pm.

Arcadia 9, Springfield 8 F/9 innings

After Springfield earned the first lead of the game off an RBI single from Sam Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.), the Scarlet Knights poured on three runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a two RBI double from Zoey Ritter to take a 3-1 lead after two innings. Springfield continued to claw into the Arcadia lead by scoring runs in third and fourth, which brought the score 4-3 after Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) knocked in a RBI single in the top of the fourth, however, a pair of runs from the Scarlet Knights would advance the gap to 6-3. The Pride put forth a huge inning in the top of the sixth scoring three runs courtesy of back-to-back hits from Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I.) to set the score at 6-6. 

Neither team was able to close it out in the seventh with Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) forcing three-straight groundouts from Arcadia. The Pride struck first in the eighth, however, Arcadia answered with a run of their to push the game to the ninth. Again, Springfield scored in the top of the ninth to take a 8-7 lead off a Breannah McCann (San Diego, Calif.) bunt that scored Olsen. In the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff hit would score the tying run for Arcadia, then, Shannon Shea hit a infield single that Springfield defended soundly, but just missed the throw home, which allowed Arcadia to walk away with the win. 

Springfield 1, Nichols 0

The second game of the day was a defensive battle leaving each team scoreless going into the seventh. Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) owned the circle only allowing three hits over seven scoreless innings. Kane dueled with Chelsea Indyk, who tallied six strikeouts in 6.2 innings of action for the Bison. Springfield put together the only scoring chance of the game as Katie Leacoma (Walpole, Mass.) laid a lead off bunt and advanced on the next at bat courtesy of a Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) sacrifice bunt to advance Leacoma. Olsen ripped a single down the left field line with two outs in the seventh that scored Leacoma and gave Springfield the 1-0 win.
