No. 12 Union Pulls Away From Men's Lacrosse, 14-7

Springfield, Mass. - March 5, 2022 - Despite leading 5-2 late in second quarter, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team was topped by 12th-ranked Union, 14-7, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play on Stagg Field. 

Union improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Pride slipped to 1-2 with the loss. 

Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) was outstanding between the pipes for Springfield as he produced a career-best 22 saves, while Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) recorded two goals and two assists and Joe Maimone (Allendale, N.J.) netted a hat trick.

For the game, Union held a 55-48 edge in shots and a 36-27 advantage in ground balls as they won 20 of the game's 25 face-offs.  

The visitors struck for the game's first goal at the 12:52 mark when Zach Davis found room down the right alley, only to have Springfield answer back just over a minute later when Burgmyer connected with Maimone for a strike from the left side at 11:41.  The Dutchmen would eventually open up a 2-1 lead with 2:11 remaining in the frame as Justine Greene bounced home a shot.

However, Springfield controlled much of the second quarter, and strung together four unanswered goals to open up a 5-2 lead with 2:18 left in the half.  The scoring burst started with a Burgmyer man-up strike at 13:18 as he scooped up a ground ball off a save and was able stuff home a shot before Maimone finished a quick-stick opportunity at 6:38 off an awesome look by Maimone.  Burgmyer and Chris Santa Barbara (Hillsborough, N.J.) added unassisted goals just 42 seconds apart to help the hosts own a three-goal edge.

Union would end the stanza in impressive fashion though, pumping in three goals in 21 seconds to even the game up at 5-5 heading int o the half as Brian Davis, Jake Titus, and Keaton McCann all found the back of the cage in the scoring flurry.   

The teams would trade a pair of goals to begin the fourth quarter, with Santa Barbara converting a Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) feed at 7:48 to tie things up at 7-7.  However, the visitors would score the final seven goals of the game, including five in a 1:29 span during the third quarter to pull away with the win. 

Dan Donahue earned the win after making 12 saves for Union, while five players had at least two points, led by McGovern's two helpers and a goal.  Matthew Paolatto went 9-for-11 on face-offs and snagged a team-best seven ground balls. 

The Pride play its third nationally-ranked team of the season on Wednesday when it hosts No.3 Tufts at 7 pm.
