Box Score Babson Park, Mass. - April 2, 2022 - Fueled by six third-quarter goals, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team stormed past Babson, 17-13, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown.
For the Pride, it now improves to 4-6, 2-4 in NEWMAC play.
Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) led Springfield with a seven-point outing on three goals and four helpers, while Joe Maimone (Allendale, N.J.) and Alek Turi (Glastonbury, Conn.) each found the back of the cage three times and Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) added three helpers. Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) made eight stops in goal and Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) snagged seven ground balls.
It was a high-scoring first quarter as the teams combined for 11 goals, and the Pride jumped out to a 5-1 lead with 8:13 on the clock after Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) buried an unassisted marker. The hosts would respond with four-straight goals in a five-plus minute span to even things up, only to have Chris Santa Barbara (Hillsborough, N.J.) get free at the 1:28 mark to give Springfield the lead for good.
The Pride would add three goals in the second compared to just one from the Beavers, as Nocito again fired an unassisted goal with 6:43 remaining in the half to push the Pride's lead to 9-6 heading into the break.
In the third, a goal in transition from Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) set the tone for the Pride less than four minutes into the stanza. Springfield would outscore the hosts by a 6-1 margin to take a commanding 15-7 cushion following a Maimone strike with 1:25 on the clock.
Babson opened the fourth with four-consecutive goals to make it a 15-10 game with 8:12 remaining in regulation, but Santa Barbara blistered in a man-up goal four minutes later off a great look from Schuette to answer back as Springfield held on for the 17-13 conference win.
On Tuesday, Springfield will host Western New England on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
