Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 30, 2022 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team netted nine goals in both the second and third quarters as it raced past Clark, 26-9, in its regular-season finale on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
The Pride will now turn its attention on the upcoming conference championship tournament as it improved to 7-8 on the season.
In helping Springfield score its most goals since a 28-goal outburst versus Emerson on March 30, 2018, Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) put on an offensive show with seven assists and five goals in three quarters of work en route to a career-high 12 points. Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) added four goals and three assists and Alek Turi (Glastonbury, Conn.) found the back of the cage six times. Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) made 11 saves to earn the win and Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) had seven ground balls after going 17-for-31 on face-offs. Springfield owned a 70-28 advantage in shots in the game and only turned the ball over five times.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm to start the game until Schuette finally broke free for the games's first goal with 6:34 remaining in the opening quarter. Burgmyer and Clark's Patrick Liddy would each score twice in the final 5:34, with Liddy beating his man inside on the crease as the horn sounded to make it a 3-2 contest after 15 minutes of play.
Springfield would erupt four nine goals in the second quarter, as Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) started off the burst as he stuffed home a shot on the crease on a great look from Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) just 39 seconds into the fame. Schuette would sting the top corner at 10:49 to make it 7-2, only to have Clark score two of the game's next three goals to pull within 8-4 with 6:54 on the clock. Springfield would close out the quarter with four unanswered strikes, as Turi converted his third goal of the stanza with six seconds remaining to give the hosts a 12-4 halftime cushion.
Schuette opened up the third with an incredible no-look pass to Tommy Briscoe (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in transition kick off the third-quarter scoring, but the visitors answered back with two goals in a 37 second span. However, Springfield would rattle off eight goals to close out the quarter, with Wilson Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) closing out the run with his first-career goal off Schuette's seventh helper of game with under a minute to play.
The Pride would tack on five more goals in the fourth, including two from Aaron Murakami (South Burlington, Vt.), as it cruised to a win in its final home game of the season.
