Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 20, 2022 - The Springfield College men's soccer program battled to a 1-1 result with Worcester State on Tuesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.
The Pride earn its second tie of the season and now are 1-3-2 on the season. Springfield put out 17 shots in the contest and held the clear advantage in corners kicks, 7-2. Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) added four saves in the tie, while his counterparts Andy Ramirez and Dylan Ruberti split time in net for the Lancers.
In a physical battle, the Pride set the tempo early applying pressure on the Worcester defense. Each of Springfield's attempts were either blocked or went just wide. At 34:40, Sebastian Correia (West Warwick, R.I.) carried the ball down the right side and sent a grounder to Leland Malloy (Bethlehem, Conn.) for the sliding attempt, but the redirection missed just outside. Springfield continued to threaten for a goal as Koul Majok (Lynn, Mass.) dribbled around the box, yet the ball sailed left. With 7:00 to play, the Lancers received one its best tries of the half when Reno Lausier shoulded in a shot to the bottom right side, however Knibbs tracked it down to hold the 0-0 stalemate. Springfield finally found its edge as Chayne Bruneau (Glastonbury, Conn.) sent a through ball to Malloy up the middle that was placed perfectly for the graduate student to chip up into the goal to put the Pride up 1-0. The lead was short lived for the Pride as the Lancers were awarded a corner on the next possession that went deep to Waseem Mahmoud for the header strike to even it up at 1-1 with just 90 seconds remaining in the half.
Springfield possessed the ball well in the second half not allowing the visitors to get a shot off until late in the 78th-minute, which was yet again turned away by Knibbs. The Pride continued to gain scoring opportunities as they looked for the go ahead attempt. At 79:30, Matthew Mela (Natick, Mass.) connected on a header, which Ramirez dove into to keep the match halted at 1-1. Worcester would find itself with three chances to win the game in the final five minutes, but Patrick Silva (Pittsfield, Mass.) would block one attempt with Knibbs making two more plays to send the game into a tie result.
Springfield resturns to action on Saturday against MIT at 2:30.
