Box Score South Hadley, Mass. - October 3, 2023 - The Springfield College field hockey team suffered another one-goal setback as it dropped a 3-2 overtime loss to Mount Holyoke in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday night.
The Pride has fallen in all four of its conference outings by one-goal margins, including two in overtime, as it is now 3-7, 0-4 against conference foes, while Mount Holyoke now stands at 8-5, 1-3.
Statistically, Springfield was dominant in the game as it owned a 38-13 margin in shots and took seven of the game's 10 penalty corners. Rachel Katzenberg was credited with 21 saves on the night for the Lyons and was impressive between the pipes, particulary in the third quarter when she faced 20 shots and made 11 stops of her own.
The host Lyons struck for the game's first goal just over four minutes into the contest when they took advantage of a Springfield defender slipping on the turf, allowing Jayonna Montigny to finish a one-on-one bid in front of the cage. The Pride knotted the game up at the 28:31 mark when Springfield was awarded a penalty stroke and Kaitlin Bardellini's (Northfield, N.H.) blast rung off the backboard to send the game into the break all tied up.
Springfield poured on the pressure in the third and would take their first lead of the evening just under two minutes into the frame as Bardellini was able to redirect a Molly Collins (Franklin, Mass.) drive off a penalty corner. However, Mount Holyoke was able to make a late push at the end of regulation, with Sophia Guziewicz's bid sliding underneath a sprawling Neilee Hess (Franklin, Mass.) to sneak inside the back post with under four minutes left in regulation.
In the extra session, Bardellini had two early chances that she was unable to convert before Montigny was able to strike for the second time on the night, as she lofted in a shot amongst two Pride defenders just over two minutes into OT.
Springfield continues conference play when it hosts Wellesley at 1 pm on Saturday.
