Springfield, Mass. – November 11, 2023 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team split its double dual meet this afternoon with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wheaton College and non-conference foe Keene State College.

The Pride eased by Keene State, 225-58, but were edged by Wheaton, 148.5-131.5.

Springfield junior Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) had an outstanding meet in the pool as he won all three of his individual events and claimed second with the 400-free relay squad to cap the day. Chan touched the wall first in the 200-free (1:46.74), the 200-fly (1:58.50) and the 200-IM (1:59.97) before teaming up with sophomore Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.), junior Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) and junior Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago) for a time of 3:11.06 in the 400-free relay.

Backlund also had a strong individual meet in addition to his relay time as he won the 100-free (47.54) and placed second in both the 100-fly (53.94) and the 50-free (21.62), while McMillan posted a second place finish in the 100-back (55.98) and a third place finish in the 500-free (5:01.72). junior Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) also claimed first place in the 1000-free (10:11.26) and the 500-free (4:55.70).

Sophomore Rocky Tang (Hong Kong) produced a second place finish in the 100-breast (1:02.60) and a third place finish in the 200-breast (2:18.32) after teaming up with first-year Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.), sophomore Viet-Ahn Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Zonghetti for third int eh 200-medley relay (1:39.21). Gutierrez went on for third in the 100-back (56.84) and third in the 200-back (2:01.18).

In the diving well, first-year Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) finished first on both boards with a 1-meter score of 258.00 and a 3-meter mark of 254.15.

Springfield will be back in action next Saturday, November 18 with a dual meet at No. 6 Williams College beginning at 1:00 pm.
