Springfield, Mass. – November 4, 2023 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team was defeated by No. 4 nationally-ranked MIT by a final score of 229-62 on Saturday afternoon inside Art Linkletter Natatorium.
Springfield produced six third place finishes in individual swimming events this afternoon which included marks by Chris Carey (Franklin, Mass.) in the 1000-free (10:49.00), Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.) in the 100-back (56.21) and the 200-back (2:02.90), Rocky Tang (Hong Kong) in the 200-fly (2:05.85), Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) in the 50-free (21.87) and Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) in the 500-free (4:55.45).
Zonghetti teamed up with Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.), Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) and Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago) for a third place finish in the 400-free relay in a time of 3:11.52, while McMillan, Viet-Anh Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Chan and Backlund took fourth in the 200-medley relay in 1:37.25.
McMillan went on to place fourth in the 200-free in 1:48.13, Backlund placed fourth in both the 50-free (21.88) and the 100-fly (54.29), Zonghetti took fourth in the 100-free (49.05), Tang took fourth in the 400-IM (4:33.53) and Nguyen swam to a fourth place finish in the 100-breast (1:03.02).
In the diving well, Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) finished second on both boards with a 1-meter score of 231.83 and a 3-meter score of 222.76.
Springfield will host Wheaton College and Keene State College in a double dual meet on Saturday, November 11 at 12:00 pm.
