Springfield, Mass. - December 2, 2023 - The Springfield College women's track and field team registered a first place finish at the Springfield Season Opening Meet with a score of 214.50 points among six teams this afternoon inside the Field House.
Behind Springfield was Westfield State with 155.50 points, Rhode Island College with 73 points, Saint Rose with 59 points, Castleton with 36 points and Sage with 10 points. The Pride won nine of the contested events in today's indoor meet.
On the track, senior Stephanie Brown (Stafford Spring, Conn.) earned a pair of wins in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 7.97 and 27.09, respectively. Springfield swept the top three places in the 60-meter dash as behind Brown were sophomore Kaitlyn Doherty (Wilmington, Mass.) in 8.07 and senior Gwen Anderson (Pawcatuck, Conn.) in 8.11. Anderson also tallied a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash in 27.34.
Springfield went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash as senior Maggie Donohue (East Hampton, Conn.) placed first in 1:03.84 and junior Julia Brillo (Ludlow, Mass.) took second in 1:04.12. Donohue and Brillo also teamed up with junior Maeve D'Arcy (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Mackenzie DiDonato (Thomaston, Conn.) for a win in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:25.91.
First-year Katherine DeFosse (Worcester, Mass.) made her collegiate debut with a first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.29 and was followed in second by senior Sam Stallard (Waldwick, N.J.) in 9.95.
Sophomore Kristina Kyle (Watertown, Conn.) paced Springfield with a runner-up finish in the mile in 5:19.07.
In the field events, Springfield tallied four event wins from four different student-athletes. In the high jump, senior Hannah LaVita (Wilmington, Mass.) and first-year Hannah Tirrell (Abington, Mass.) produced marks of 1.46 meters (4 feet, 9.5 inches), while in the pole vaults junior Jillian Scott (Westhampton, Mass.) and classmate Ella Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) both cleared 2.95 meters (9 feet, 8 inches). Junior Samantha Paul (Albany, N.Y.) tallied the win in the triple jump with a best leap of 11.50 meters (37 feet, 8.75 inches), while senior Sophie Warren (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior Katelynn Taylor (Franklin, Mass.) took 1-2 in the shot put with best marks of 11.43 meters (37 feet, 6 inches) and 11.20 meters (36 feet, 9 inches), respectively.
Warren also produced a runner-up finish in the weight throw with a best toss of 15.89 meters (52 feet, 1.75 inches).
Springfield will next travel to the Tufts Jumbo Invitational on Saturday, January 13 before returning home for the Massasoit Classic on Saturday, January 20.
