Springfield, Mass. - December 2, 2023 - The Springfield College men's track and field team registered a first place finish at the Springfield Season Opening Meet with a score of 253.50 points among six teams this afternoon inside the Field House.
Behind Springfield was Westfield State with 112.50 points, Rhode Island College with 64 points, Saint Rose with 40 points, Castleton with 35 points and Sage with 32 points. The Pride won 11 of the contested events in today's indoor meet.
Springfield began the meet by sweeping the top three places in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Junior Anik Dole (Dubai, UAE) won the 60-meter dash in 6.94 and was followed by senior Evan Weber (Purchase, N.Y.) in 6.98 and senior Dante Lingley (Westbrook, Maine) in 7.01. Weber went on to win the 200-meter dash in 22.32 and was followed by Dole in 23.03 and senior Anthony Penta (Southington, Conn.) in 23.09. Weber's time of 22.32 was converted down to a mark of 21.93 for national qualifying standards and as of 9:00 pm on Saturday night, he has the fastest time in Division III men's track and field across 400 plus student-athletes who ran this weekend.
Junior Joe Wong (Salem, Mass.) won the 1000-meter run in 2:34.63 before he teamed up with sophomore Jeremiah Singer (Barnstable, Mass.), graduate student Adam Mula (West Townsend, Mass.) and senior Bradyn Cote (South Hadley, Conn.) for first in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:38.35. Mula also won the mile in 4:34.37.
Behind Wong in the 1000-meter was first-year Tyler Knaggs (Scotia, N.Y.) with a time of 2:40.10. Springfield also went 1-2 in the 60-meter hurdles as first-year Mike Anderson (Cromwell, Conn.) took first in 8.53 and classmate Isaiah Hannah (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) took second in 8.84.
Sophomore Jamil Manu (Manchester, Conn.) was impressive in the field events with wins in the high jump with a best clearance of 1.99 meters (6 feet, 6.25 inches) and the long jump with a best leap of 6.66 meters (21 feet, 10.25 inches). Behind Manu in the high jump with sophomore Daniel Hyde (Monroe, Conn.) with a mark of 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4.75 inches), while Weber took second in the long jump with a mark of 6.52 meters (21 feet, 4.75 inches).
Graduate student Jamie Cocca (Sand Lake, N.Y.) swept the shot put and the weight throw events as he tossed the shot put a distance of 13.31 meters (43 feet, 8 inches) and the weight throw a distance of 16.93 meters (55 feet, 6.5 inches) for the Pride.
Sophomore Alex McKenney (Ossining, N.Y.) rounded out the list of winners for Springfield as he produced a first place finish in the pole vault with a best clearance of 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11.50 inches).
Springfield will next travel to the Tufts Jumbo Invitational on Saturday, January 13 before returning home for the Massasoit Classic on Saturday, January 20.
