Box Score Amherst, Mass. – March 22, 2023 - Taking on another nationally-ranked squad, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team was bested by Amherst, 17-8, on Wednesday night.
Ranked ninth in this week's USILA Division III National Poll, Amherst is now 4-1, while the Pride fell to 2-5.
Jack Hamilton (Falmoth, Mass.) made nine saves in the loss, while Conor Tracy (Walpole, Mass.) and Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) each found the back of the cage twice.
After 15 minutes of play, the teams were knotted up at 1-1, as a strike from Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) at 1:46 pulled the teams even. In the second, the Mammoths would score all four goals to head into the break with a 5-1 lead. Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) broke the Pride's scoring drought with an unassisted goal just 20 seconds into the second half, but the hosts would pump in four goals in just 70 seconds to have their lead balloon to 9-2 with just over nine minutes left in the quarter.
An unassisted goal by Tracy inside the opening minute of the fourth made it a 12-5 game in favor of Amherst before the hosts netted five unanswered goals to take their largest lead of the game. Springfield would tack on the final three goals of the game to complete the scoring, with Nocito connecting for a man-up goal in the waning seconds.
Springfield returns to conference play on Saturday when it travels to MIT for a rematch of last year's NEWMAC Championship.
