No. 5 Union Pulls Away From Men's Lacrosse

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. – March 5, 2023 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team was toppled by nationally-ranked Union, 13-5, on Sunday afternoon.

The Dutchmen, who were ranked fifth in the country in the most recent USILA Poll and were the national runner-up in last year's NCAA Division III Championship, improved to 3-0.  The Pride dipped to 0-3 with the loss. Union was led by Dan Donahue, who made a season-best 22 stops between the pipes for the hosts.

Springfield outshot Union 51-46, but Donahue's 22 saves surpassed the 11 of Springfield's Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.). Union finished the game 23-for-24 in clears and also 15-6 edge at the faceoff X.

For the Pride, Conor Tracy (Walpole, Mass.) produced three goals and an assist, Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored twice, and Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) picked up six ground balls and caused four turnovers.

After Donahue made stops on Springfield's first two possessions, Owen Toland opened the scoring 4:00 into the contest . Union then struck for two goals in eight seconds soon after, with Peter Burnes finding the net from Justin Greene and then Michael Shaw scoring after Matthew Paolatto cleanly won the draw and went down the field for the feed.

Tracy scored two in a row for the visitors, including one while man-up, to get back within a goal with 3:53 left in the first, but Peter Kip stopped the momentum with his first of the game to give Union a 4-2 lead after one quarter. The home team followed up by scoring three of the four goals in the second stanza, with Mabardy netting a pair and Kip adding his second of the afternoon to take a 7-3 lead into the half.

Union put the game away with a strong third frame, scoring five unanswered goals and getting seven stops from Donahue to take a 12-3 advantage. Tierney and Tracy would each find the back of the net in the fourth as Springfield dropped the non-conference outing.

Springfield will play another nationally-ranked team on Wednesday when it travels to Tufts.
