Box Score Medford, Mass. – March 8, 2023 - Playing a nationally-ranked team for the second-straight outing, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team was bested by Tufts, 31-9, on Wednesday night.
Ranked fourth in this week's USILA Division III National Poll, Tufts is now 2-0 on the year, while the Pride fell to its second team ranked in the top-five nationally to dip to 0-4.
Tufts high-scoring offense erupted for 14 goals in the third quarter to blow open the game. The Jumbos held a 70-26 advantage in shots for the game as Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) totaled 14 of the Pride's 17 saves between the pipes.
After Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) opened up the scoring in the game with a strike inside the opening minute of play, the hosts netted a pair to take a 2-1 advantage at the 11:08 mark. Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) would get free for a man-up goal at 9:48 to tie the game up, only to have Tufts rattle off five goals to close out the quarter. Springfield would get within 9-5 after Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) ripped back-to-back goals 48 seconds apart with just over five minutes left in the half, but a late strike from the Tufts would make it a 10-5 lead at the break.
In the third, the Jumbos would pour on 14 goals, including five in the first three-plus minutes, as it pulled away to cruise to the non-conference win.
Springfield will next clash with Endicott on Wednesday in a neutral-site contest at Yale beginning at 6 pm.
