Box Score Worcester, Mass. – April 29, 2023 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team came from behind to close the 2023 regular season with an 11-10 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win on the road at Clark University this afternoon.
Springfield, which has clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament, ended the regular season with an overall record of 6-9 and a mark of 5-1 in league play.
Conor Tracy (Walpole, Mass.) powered the Springfield offense and matched his season-high with six goals and two assists for eight points. Defensively, both Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) and Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) guided the Pride with four ground balls apiece, while Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) registered a career-high seven caused turnovers.
Tracy tallied Springfield's lone goal of the first quarter as the score stood even at 1-1 through 15 minutes of play. Clark went on a 5-1 scoring run over a span of 10:56 in the second quarter for a 6-2 lead. Tracy scored two unassisted goals for the Pride in quarter two before Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) potted Springfield's fourth goal of the game prior to halftime.
Springfield outscored Clark 4-0 in the third and took and 8-6 lead heading into the final quarter. In the third, Tracy posted two unassisted goals and two assists in between solo strikes from Alek Turi (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jaiden Gaudet (Falmouth, Mass.).
Tracy and Burgmeyer teamed up for back-to-back goals early in the fourth to give the Pride their largest lead of the game (10-6), but Clark applied pressure and scored four of the final five goals of the contest. Attililo LaVecchia cut Clark's deficit to one with 22 ticks left on the clock and forced a turnover with a chance to even the game at 11 prior to the end of regulation.
Zachary Conant forced the turnover for Clark and the Cougars were able to clear the ball successfully, but the hosts turned it over ending the game in an 11-10 final in favor of Springfield.
Statistically, Springfield held a 49-32 edge in shots, went 21-of-22 on clearing attempts and won 10-of-24 face-offs at the X. Clark led in ground balls, 29-25, and went 15-for-16 in transition.
Springfield will host third-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals on Thursday, May 4 at 7:00 pm on Stagg Field.
