Box Score Springfield, Mass. – April 8, 2023 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team scored 16 second-half goals to surge past visiting Emerson, 24-13, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday at Stagg Field.
The win pushes Springfield's record to 4-7, 3-1 in conference play, while the Lions fall to 4-8, 1-2.
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) was sensational on offense for the Pride as he produced nine points on six goals and three assists, while Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) contributed three goals and two assists. Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) led a defensive unit with 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers and Jack Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) played the final three quarters between the pipes, notching five saves in the win. Springfield had a 62-27 advantage in shots for the game and a 48-21 cushion in ground balls as the duo of Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Vincent Scialdone (YOrktown Heights, N.Y.) combined for go 31-for-41 from the face-off "X".
It was a back-and-forth opening quarter of play as Emerson would own a 4-3 lead entering the second following a goal with just four seconds left in the frame. The Pride would respond with five goals in the second quarter, as Tierney took a Jaiden Gaudet (Falmouth, Mass.) feed and found the bottom corner at 4:52 to give Springfield a 7-6 lead. Springfield would head into halftime with a 8-7 cushion following a strike from Burgmyer with 1:49 remaining in the stanza.
Springfield poured in a 6-1 scoring run to start the third quarter, getting goals from six different student-athletes, as Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) scored in transition to give Springfield a 14-8 lead with just under four minutes left in the frame. Emerson would get within 16-12 with 10:44 remaining in regulation, only to have Springfield score five goals in a 3:45 span, including a pair from Tierney and Nicholas Gorman (Valhalla, N.Y.) to have the lead balloon to 21-12. Springfield would finish in the fourth quarter with nine goals and Joseph Sabella's (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) first-career goal would conclude the game's scoring at 24-13.
On Wednesday, Springfield will clash with cross-town rival Western England in a 7 pm contest.
