Springfield, Mass. – January 13, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team posted two wins this afternoon over Union College and Hartwick College in a double dual meet in Art Linkletter Natatorium.
Springfield defeated Union by a score of 154-133 and Hartwick by a 158-136 final for its second and third dual meet victories of the season.
Springfield began the day with a first place finish in the 200-medley relay as junior
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago), sophomore
Viet-Ahn Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.), junior
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) and sophomore
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) clocked a time of 1:37.13.
McMillan went on to finish first in the 100-back in 55.93 and third in the 100-free in 49.56, Nguyen placed third in the 100-breast in 1:02.90 and fourth in the 50-free in 22.52, Chan placed first in both the 200-free in 1:45.85, first in the 500-free in 4:55.76 and second in the 200-fly in 1:59.74 and Backlund placed second in the 50-free in 21.90.
Junior
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) earned a first place win in the 1000-free with a time of 10:14.45 and second in the 500-free in 4:59.03, while first-year
Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.) placed first in the 200-back in 2:05.61 and second in the 100-back in 57.28.
Junior
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) registered a second place finish in the 100-free in 49.54 and a fourth place finish in the 100-fly in 54.76, while sophomore
Rocky Tang (Hong Kong) placed third in the 200-breast in 2:20.85 and fourth in the 200-IM in 2:05.73.
Backlund, Nguyen, McMillan and Zonghetti capped the meet with a first place finish in the 200-free relay in a time of 1:26.91.
In the diving well, first-year
Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) placed first on the 1-meter board with an NCAA diving regional qualifying score of 467 and second on the 3-meter board with an NCAA diving regional qualifying score of 444.
Springfield will host Wesleyan University (Conn.) and Roger Williams University next Saturday in another double dual meet inside Art Linkletter Natatorium beginning at 1:00 pm.
