Springfield, Mass. – November 23, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team was defeated by Coast Guard, 175-120, on Saturday morning inside Art Linkletter Natatorium.
Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) shined for Springfield in the diving well winning both disciplines with massive scores of 302.63 on the 1-meter board and 309.90 on the 3-meter board well above the qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Northeast-North Diving Regional competition.
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) had a strong day for the Pride in the pool as he placed first in the 200-IM (2:00.14), second in the 100-fly (50.81) and third in the 100-back (55.33). He also teamed up with
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.),
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) and
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) for first in the 800-free relay for a time of 7:10.61.
Quinney went on to win the 100-breast (59.27) and second in the 200-IM (2:01.60), while Backlund took second in both the 200-free (1:46.71) and 100-free (47.88). Backlund also swam alongside
Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.),
Viet-Ahn Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Zonghetti for third in the 400-medley relay in 3:40.81.
Gutierrez registered a second place finish in the 200-back (2:04.04), while Nguyen took second in the 50-free (22.40).
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) rounded out the highlights for the Pride today against the Bears with his runner-up finish in the 1000-free in 10:17.18.
Springfield will now prep for the Gompei Invitational, which takes place at WPI from December 6-8.
