Men's Swimming and Diving Downs Wheaton, 154-137

Norton, Mass. – November 9, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team picked up its first win of the 2024-25 campaign as the Pride downed New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wheaton College 154-137, on Saturday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium.

Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) posted a trio of first place finishes on the afternoon as he clocked winnings time of 1:58.60 in the 200-fly, 48.28 in the 100-free and 50.93 in the 100-fly. Chan's time in the 100-fly is a season best and ranks third in the NEWMAC this season. Chan teamed up with Jordon McMilllan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago), Matthew Kenvin (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) for second in the 200-medley relay in 1:37.03.

Kenvin went on to win the 200-breast in 2:11.22 as well as the 200-IM in 1:57.36 in addition to his third place finish in the 50-free in 22.06. Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) had a strong day in the pool for the Pride contributing 15 points to Springfield's score with a first place finish in the 200-free (1:44.40), a second place finish in the 50-free (21.63), a fourth place finish in the 100-free (48.42) and a second place finish in the 400-free relay (3:14.40) alongside Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.), McMillan and Zonghetti.

Quinney individually registered a win in the 100-breast in 1:00.51 and placed third in the 200-breast in 2:15.40, while Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.) picked up a runner-up finish in the 200-back in 2:03.57 and Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) earned a second place finish in the 1000-free (10:18.08) and a third place finish in the 500-frre (4:59.34).

In the diving well, Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) swept both boards with a score of 304.42 on the 1-meter and a mark of 255.97 on the 3-meter. His 1-meter score was well about the 275.00 needed to hit the qualifying mark for NCAA Diving Regionals later this season.

Springfield will return home for a double-dual meet next Saturday against No. 6 Williams College and Wesleyan University beginning at 12:00 pm.
