Worcester, Mass. – December 6, 2024 – Highlighted by school records from both graduate student
Matthew Kenvin (Boca Raton, Fla.) and
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) on Friday night, the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team opened action at the 2024 Gompei Invitational held at WPI.
Through one day, Springfield ranks fourth in the team standings with 1262.5 points behind Division I Bryant (3189), WPI (2150.5) and Division II Bentley (1419).
Chan registered his school record this morning in the 100-fly as he swam a time of 49.14 to take the top seed heading into the championship finals this evening. Chan broke the record held by his brother James Chan, who posted a mark of 49.29 during the 2023 season. The senior, who posted the best Division III time in the finals, capped his historic night with a third place finish in the event in 49.58.
Behind Chan in the 100-fly was
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) in fifth in 51.66,
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.), who won the B final in 51.49 and
Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.), who won the C final in 54.02.
Kenvin continued the success in the 200-breast as he smashed an 11-year old school record with his first place finish in a time of 2:01.79. Kenvin's mark broke Michael Normoyle's mark of 2:02.2 from the 2013 campaign.
Behind Kenvin in the 200-breast was
Brian Douglass (Wilbraham, Mass.) in 12th in 2:16.59 and
Ben Terentiyev (Melrose, Mass.) in 13th in 2:17.79.
Springfield began the day in the mixed 200-medley relay as
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago), Nina Lamb, Chan and Kay Shen recorded a third place finish with a time of 1:39.64. The quartet was the top-finishing Division III relay in the event just behind the "A" and "B" teams from Division I Bryant University.
Chan and Kenvin teamed up with Backlund and Zonghetti for a runner-up finish in the 200-medley relay in 1:32.87 only behind Division I Bryant, while Backlund and Zonghetti teamed up with McMillan and
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) for a runner-up finish in the 800-free relay in 6:57.32 only behind Bryant.
Quinney went on to finish seventh in the 200-IM in 1:56.92, while Milligan won the C final of the event in 2:00.64, while Backlund finished as the runner-up in the 50-free and was followed by Zonghetti in sixth in 21.42 and
Viet-Ahn Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) in 15th in 22.05.
Friday's highlights were rounded out by
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.), who took ninth in the 500-free in 4:49.77. McMillan was the runner-up in the B final in 4:52.00 and
Nick Hall (West Hartford, Conn.) was the runner-up in the C final in 5:06.35.
Springfield returns to the pool for day two of the Gompei Invite tomorrow at 9:00 am.
