Worcester, Mass. – December 6, 2025 – Through two days in the pool, Springfield College has produced a score of 2249.5 points to sit in sixth place at the 2025 Gompei Invitational.
This year's meet features a mix of Division I, I and III programs as the pack of nine schools is being led by the host Engineers. Bentley, Saint Peter's, Sacred Heart and Brandeis round out the top five as the scoring for the meet is a combined mark of men's and women's results across the three day meet.
Friday Highlights:
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) had a great day in the pool on Friday as he produced fifth place finishes in the 50-free in 21.45 and the 100-fly in 52.10.
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) also tallied a fifth place finish in the 200-IM to pace the Pride in 1:56.94. Behind Quinney in the 200-IM was
Charles Deaton (Bluffton, S.C.) in 2:06.42 and
Ben Terentiyev (Melrose, Mass.) in 2:12.01.
Springfield had four student-athletes score points in the 50-free behind Backlund as
Viet-Anh Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took 18th in 22.34,
Kellen Maher (Naugatuck, Conn.) took 25th in 23.02,
Jason Kim (Shelton, Conn.) took 26th in 23.04 and
Spencer Studley (Meriden, Conn.) took 30th in 23.43. Terentiyev paced the Pride in the 200-breast in 12th with a time of 2:22.08 and was followed by Studley in 2:26.46,
Brandon Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) in 2:29.70 and Kim in 2:35.10. Behind Backlund in the 100-fly was
Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.) in ninth in 52.65 and
Zavier Villanueva (Wilbraham, Mass.) in 30th in 56.00.
Rounding out the first day of the Gompei Invite was
Riley Hester (Barkhamsted, Conn.) placing seventh in the 500-free in 4:49.89. Hester was followed by Villanueva in 5:09.17,
Nick Hall (West Hartford, Conn.) in 4:58.97 and
Greg Kratz (South Windsor, Conn.) in 5:12.62.
Quinney led off the 200-medley relay that also featured Nguyen, Milligan and Backlund as the quartet clocked a 1:34.74 for third place. Quinney also led off the 800-free relay that also featured Backlund, Villanueva and Hester as the relay clocked a 7:06.72 for fourth place.
Saturday Highlights:
Saturday began with a fifth place finish by the 200-free relay team as Quinney, Backlund, Villanueva and Nguyn clocked a 1:26.39.
Milligan and Quinney recorded top-10 finishes in the 100-back with Milligan finishing second in 52.55 and Quinney taking sixth in 52.89. Backlund paced the Pride in the 50-fly with a third place finish in 22.93. Nguyen (fifth in 24.05) and Milligan (tenth in 24.72) also recorded top-10 finishes for Springfield in the event. Backlund then led the Pride with a ninth place finish in the 200-free in 1:50.61.
Quinney (third in 58.54) and Milligan (tenth in 1:01.99) led Springfield in the 100-breast, while
John Szucs (Brewster, Mass.) was the lone scorer for the Pride in the 50-back clocking a time of 27.00.
Milligan, Quinney, Backlund and Nguyen wrapped up the day with a sixth place finish in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:33.17.
Springfield will wrap up the Gompei Invitational tomorrow morning at 9:00 am from Worcester.
