Worcester, Mass. – December 7, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team competed on day two of the 2024 Gompei Invitational held at WPI on Saturday evening.
Springfield sits in fifth place of ten teams with a total of 2596.5 points.
Springfield's relay teams highlighted day two action in the pool as the 400-medley relay squad of
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago),
Matthew Kenvin (Boca Raton, Fla.),
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) and
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) nearly broke the school record, but came up just short with a runner-up finish in 3:23.62.
Backlund and Chan teamed up with
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) and
Viet-Anh Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) for fifth in the 200-free relay in 1:24.45.
Individually, Kenvin had the best individual finish of the day as he placed third in the 100-breast in 56.31, while
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) was right behind him in fourth in 57.76. Nguyen won the C final of the 100-breast in 1:01.54.
McMillan was Springfield's top finisher in the 100-back as he placed sixth in 52.89, while Chan paced the Pride in both the 50-fly (22.91) and the 200-free (1:44.00). Behind Chan in the 200-free was Backlund (1:44.97), Quinney (1:45.22) and Zonghetti (1:44.21).
Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.) was Springfield's top finisher in the 400-IM in 4:23.81.
The final day of the Gompei Invitational is set to get underway tomorrow morning at 9:00 am from WPI.
