Springfield, Mass. – February 10, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team completed the dual meet portion of its 2023-24 schedule this afternoon with a 134-103 setback to Babson College inside Art Linkletter Natatorium.
Springfield finished the year with a 6-6 record in dual meets this season.
First-year
Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.), sophomore
Viet-Anh Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore
Rocky Tang (Hong Kong) and junior
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:38.89.
Junior
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) swept the distance events with a first place finish in the 1000-free in 10:03.50 and a win in the 500-free in 4:50.21, while junior
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) earned individual wins in both the 200-IM in 1:57.30 and the 200-fly in 1:56.20. After his swim in the leadoff relay, Tang went on to finish first in the 200-breast in 2:16.04, while Gutierrez and Nguyen placed second in the 200-back (2:00.15) and 50-free (22.34), respectively.
Junior
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago) posted a pair of third place finishes in the 200-free (1:48.15) and the 100-free (48.71), but it was sophomore
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.), who guided the pride in the 100-free with a first place finish in 47.30.
Springfield's "B" relay of first-year
Zavier Villanueva (Wilbraham, Mass.), senior
Chris Carey (Franklin, Mass.), Goolsbey and Nguyen finished second in 3:19.52.
In the diving well, first-year
Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) won the 3-meter board with a score of 294.31 and finished second on the 1-meter board with a score of 276.90, both of which are above the qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Northeast-North Diving Regionals.
Springfield will return to the pool in two weeks at the 2023-24 NEWMAC Championships, which will begin on Thursday, February 22 on the campus of MIT.
