Men's Swimming and Diving Bests Trinity

Hartford, Conn. – February 3, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team defeated Trinity College (Conn.) in a dual meet this afternoon by a score of 176-102.5. The victory pushed Springfield's dual meet win streak to five and the Pride are now 6-4 on the season.

The event began with the 200-yard mixed medley relay as Carolyn Blenk (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Viet-Anh Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.), and Kay Shen (Hong Kong) posted the Springfield's' best time at 1:42.19 for third place.

Junior Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) paced Springfield's efforts in the pool today as he individually won three events in the 100-fly (51.27), the 100-free (48.14) and the 500-free (5:02.11). The Pride swept the top-three places in the 200-IM led by first-year Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.) in 2:06.04 and followed by junior Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) in 2:08.93 and junior Jon Sherlock (West Chester, Pa.) in 2:12.55.

Goolsbey also placed first in the 1000-free in 10:05.62, while junior Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) placed first in the 200-free in 1:50.26, Backlund placed first in the 50-free in 21.45 and junior Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago) placed first in the 100-back in 55.28. Backlund also placed second in the 50-fly in 23.52, while McMillan registered a second place finish in the 50-back in 25.50,  Nguyen took second in the 50-breast in 27.73, Rocky Tang (Hong Kong) took second in the 1000-free (10:30.37) and the 500-free (5:02.93) and first-year Zavier Villanueva (Wilbraham, Mass.) took second in the 200-free in 1:51.62.

Tang, Villanueva, junior Brian Douglass (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Goolsbey finished third in the 800-free relay in 7:31.33.

In the diving well, first-year Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) won both boards with scores of 261.08 on the 1-meter board and 269.25 on the 3-meter board.

Springfield will return to the pool tomorrow afternoon with a dual against Amherst College in Art Linkletter Natatorium beginning at 1:00 pm.
