Springfield, Mass. – April 3, 2024 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving program had three student-athletes honored for their academic and athletic excellence by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) as they were named to the 2023-24 CSC Academic All-District Men's Swimming and Diving Team.
The trio of
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong),
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) and
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) garnered the regional academic honor, which was selected by College Sports Communicators and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Chan, a health science major with a 3.54 grade point average, Backlund, an exercise science major with a 3.63 grade point average, and Goolsbey, a physician assistant studies major with a 3.95 grade point average, all had outstanding seasons that were capped at the 2024 NEWMAC Championships.
Individually at the NEWMAC Championships, Chan placed third in the 200-fly, sixth in the 100-fly and 13th in the 200-IM, while Backlund finished third in the 50-free, ninth in the 100-free and 13th in the 100-fly. Goolsbey, meanwhile, posted a sixth place finish in the 1650-free, a tenth place finish in the 500-free and an 18th place finish in the 200-free at the NEWMAC Championships.
