Schenectady, N.Y. – January 11, 2025 – In its first dual meet action of the 2025 calendar year, the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team swept both Union College and Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride topped Union, 205-85, and Hartwick, 200-96, to improve to 4-3 in dual meets for the season.
Springfield began the meet with a first place finish in the 200-medley relay as
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago),
Matthew Kenvin (Boca Raton, Fla.),
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) and
Viet-Ahn Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) teamed up for a time of 1:37.27.
Kenvin went on to sweep the breaststroke events with a time of 58.16 in the 100-breast and a time of 2:09.24 in the 200-breast, while Chan produced two first place finishes in the butterfly events with a time of 50.31 in the 100-fly and a time of 1:55.54 in the 200-fly.
McMillan led Springfield to a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100-back as he won the event in 55.68 and was followed by
Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.) in 56.90 and
Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.) in third in 57.02. McMillan also placed second in the 100-free in 49.29, while Gutierrez won the 200-back in 2:04.38 and Milligan placed fourth in the 200-IM in 2:08.35.
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) registered a pair of first place finishes as he won the 200-free in 1:45.85 and the 200-IM in 1:59.90 in addition to his third place finish in the 100-breast in 59.94.
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) also had a strong day in the pool as he won the 100-free in 48.89 and took second in both the 50-free in 22.33 and the 200-free in 1:46.68.
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) rounded out the list of individual winners in the swimming portion of the meet as he touched first in the 1000-free in 10:13.44 in addition to his runner-up finish in the 500-free in 4:57.01.
Backlund, Kenvin, Chan and
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) registered the fastest time in the 200-free relay as an exhibition swim as the quartet clocked a 1:28.06.
In the diving well,
Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) continued his stellar sophomore campaign by sweeping both boards. Butler registered an NCAA Diving Regional qualifying score of 303.80 on the 1-meter board and a mark of 267.10 on the 3-meter board.
Springfield will return to action next weekend with a double dual at Wesleyan University alongside Roger Williams beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday the 18th.
