Worcester, Mass. – February 21, 2025 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team broke three school records on the second day of the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships held at WPI.
Through two days, Springfield sits in third place with 271.5 points. Just ahead of Springfield is MIT (498) and Coast Guard (382).
The quartet of
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.),
Matthew Kenvin (Boca Raton, Fla.),
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) and
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) tied the 200-free relay program record from 2008 during prelims this morning with a time of 1:22.63 before they returned to the pool this evening dropping 0.39-seconds for a 1:22.24 to not only smash the record but earn a bronze medal as well as a spot on the podium.
Kevnin returned to the pool in the 200-IM and broke the program record this morning during prelims as he clocked a 1:51.16. The old record held by Michael Normoyle has stood since 2015. Kenvin registered a 1:52.01 for fifth place in this evening's championship finals. Quinney joined Kenvin in the championship final of the 200-IM as he posted a 1:52.89 for seventh. His mark also fell under the old school record held by Normoyle.
Zonghetti and Backlund appeared in the championship final of the 50-free posting times of 20.94 and 21.02, respectively, for sixth place and eighth place. Zonghetti's sixth place finish was 0.14-seconds faster than his prelim swim this morning.
The night concluded with
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago), Kenvin,
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) and Zonghetti posting yet another school record as the quartet broke the program's mark in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:22.83 for fourth place in the championship finals. Chan and McMillan were part of the old record holding quartet from 2023 (3:23.35).
Ryan Goolsbey (East Lyme, Conn.) was Springfield's top finisher in the 500-free finishing in 14th place with a time of 4:46.17 and was joined in the consolation finals by
Nick Hall (West Hartford, Conn.), who clocked a 4:46.75 for 15th, and McMillan, who clocked a 4:49.32, for 18th place.
Springfield will return to the pool tomorrow morning for day three of the 2025 NEWMAC Championships and will compete in the 400-IM, 100-fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, 200-medley relay and 1-meter dive. Prelims begin at 10:00 am from Worcester.
